Dogs in Alaska are traditionally used for travel between villages. Today the snow machine has taken the place of the dog team, which are now mostly used for racing. The most famous of these races is the Iditarod, a 1049 mile trek from Anchorage to Nome. The race is known as one of the toughest races on earth, and the trail runs across Alaska stopping through villages which act as checkpoints where dogs can be sent back to Anchorage if they are injured or unable to keep up. As pack animals they will follow their leaders through the terrain, sometimes in complete darkness, until they reach their destination in Nome.
