Sigrid Ekran

This is Sigrid. Some people and events come into your life and change the course of it entirely. Sigrid does that. She did it to me in 2007 when I went to Alaska to photograph a young girl running her first long-distance dog race. The Iditarod, said to be one of the toughest races on earth. I believe it. 1069 miles through the toughest wilderness Alaska can offer mid March. She was 26, I was 28. We clicked, I stayed on in Alaska, and we moved to a small dry cabin the bush, the complete opposite of my Chinatown apartment in New York. For a year we shared a life with her dogs and nature. I went there to get away, to photograph something different, I came away with a newfound love of nature and a few frostbitten toes.

These are some of the photographs I have made of Sigrid over the years.
