Photography Sessions with Kristine Nyborg

 LISTEN WHILE YOU BROWSE

July 9 - August 28, 2022

ONLINE WORKSHOP

Build a foundation for your photography with a personal project through intentional mentoring.

By August, have new work to share and the beginnings of a personal project built on the foundation of your own voice.

The personal project charts the course in your art. It is your safe space to be who you are in that very moment in your creativity. It is a process of self-reflection and a way to discover your path.

Give your photography some direction, even when you are moving in all directions at once.

Often these are the projects that set the foundation for your career. Let’s discover the purpose of your work and how it can serve your audience.

LEARN WHERE TO START, HOW TO FIND THE IMAGES AND DISCOVER THE RIGHT AUDIENCE FOR YOUR PHOTOGRAPHS.

This summer. . .

  • Learn to approach research.

  • You’ll have homework, assignments and constructive feedback.

  • Get to work with a community.

  • Find purpose for your work.

  • Spend time in your creative space with the added bonus of group accountability.

All levels of photography are welcome, I’ll find you where you are.

While we work on the practical applications together you get access to The Opening Line, a step-by-step workshop teaching you the basic structure of a photojournalistic narrative in pictures. The combination of Project Unknown’s instruction and mentoring with the pre-recorded lessons of The Opening Line will turn you into a more confident storyteller by August.

Hi, I’m Kristine…

This year I’m publishing a photography book. It didn’t start as a book. It didn’t even start as a project. It started as a bunch of pictures I made for a specific reason which over time became a project.

Personal projects are the reason I’ve sustained over 20 years as a professional photographer. They are what motivates me to keep learning about photography, keep growing and keep experimenting. Every project have changed me in some way, both personally and professionally.

I want to know you. I want to know your dreams and aspirations and I want to know them through your pictures. Join me this summer and show me who you are in pictures.

And here is a bio written by me in the third person:

KRISTINE NYBORG

Pronounced Kris-teen-uh.

Kristine Nyborg tells stories through photographs. Her work explores the links between daily life, culture and mental health. For the past eight years she has focused on maternal mental health with the project Learning To Speak Bear. Nyborg’s work has been published in publications across Europe and North America. She is a Norwegian photographer living in Canada.

Students said:

Working with Kristine was calming and helpful, and very different from so many fast paced surface level classes. I learned skills and well as insights about my work, and I thought all the aspects of the class were helpful, useful, interesting, and different from what I’ve seen offered other places.
— Shelley, USA (the Archive workshop)

I always feel safe when working with Kristine. I also feel being seen, heard and understood. And most of all, empowered. I like her honesty and sense of humor, and of course, her wonderful knowledge in her field.
— Dawn Lu, Germany (the Archive and Quietly Loud workshop)

Working with Kristine was like working with a dear, longtime friend. She caught up on the stories of my life and of my images so quickly, intuitively. Kristine is a skilled photographer, gifted teacher, with a compassionate and deep spirit.
— Jennifer Butner, USA (the Archive workshop)

Having Kristine look at my work was very rewarding. She confirmed that some of the images I really loved were also speaking to her. She helped me focus on my goal, pick a direction and get the work DONE. Accountability is key when it comes to personal work and this class was something I had been wanting to do for 1 year but I had to wait until I had the time to dedicate to it. I’m so glad it finally worked out. I’m excited to dive into my archive again and pick an other direction next.
— Johanna, Ireland (the Archive workshop)

If you have a chance to take one of Kristine’s classes, DO IT. She is a patient and genuinely kind teacher. You get the sense that she truly is trying to help you make an impact on your own work. She is one of those teachers that you never hesitate to be honest with, because you just know she has made room at the table she sits at not waiting for you to be good enough to join her space.
— Tara McMinn, USA (An Unconventional Photography Workshop)

Kristine is an incredibly kind and thoughtful teacher. She has a way of seeing the world and connecting with people that is very genuine.
— Emilie P, Canada (An Unconventional Photography Workshop)

On top of that, Kristine’s feedback was so accurate and thoughtful. I find her to be an incredibly wise person and photographer and she proves to be an incredible mentor and instructor as well.
— Margaret, USA (An Unconventional Photography Workshop)

Kristine provides personal anecdotes, inspiration, and critiques that are curious and gentle, which also prodding and enlightening.
— Katherine Emery, USA (An Unconventional Photography Workshop and The Archive)

Kristine is a great teacher and a joy to listen to. She has such a peaceful way of communicating beautiful and big truths. I really enjoyed her insight into making different and meaning photographs.
— Stephanie Lyell, USA (An Unconventional Photography Workshop)

Kristine is such a gifted story teller and photographer. She is very open honest and encouraging.
— Tamara Dayle, Canada (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

Kristine is not just a kind and wonderful human being, but also an excellent teacher and her thoughtful and honest feedback is invaluable. I hope there’ll be another opportunity to learn from her again soon.
— Nadja Arnold, Australia (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

Kristine’s involvement and thoughtfulness throughout our time together was like a balm. Considering the time we live in now, the unknowns caused me to feel sluggish, unmotivated, and sometimes apathetic. Kristine gave me room to sit in this discomfort while giving plentiful opportunities to grow and shape my perceptions. I learned that personal projects are laborious, emotional, and important. Growth comes through hours of observations and investigations; both of myself and my subject.
— Amy Thelen, USA (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

Kristine is a warm and giving teacher with a wealth of experience in, and understanding of, photographic storytelling. I learned (am still learning) so much about myself as a photographer and my own storytelling voice. Working through the content again and again to can only help to clarify and deepen my understanding. Kristine’s critiques are thoughtful and honest, just what you’d hope for from a favourite teacher. I hope to work with her again.
— Lisa, Australia (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

I deeply appreciate that Kristine brought back that joy in learning. Her knowledge, effort, time and humanity put into her workshop make it highly authentic. You learn about photography ánd the photographer inside you.
— Mieke Haesaert, Belgium (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

Kristine’s ability to translate her expertise into guidance for her students is unmatched. Her courses are carefully and throughly designed and delivered. Anyone who puts in the work will see results and feel proud of their progress. She’s nurturing and practical and super fun to be around.
— Katie Jett Walls, USA (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

Kristine is such a great educator. She has taught me to think, feel and take pictures like a photographer. Just like the wool sweaters she wears, she warms my developing photographer’s heart. I’m glad to have Kristine Nyborg in my corner.
— Esther Bryce, Canada (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

You will love being a student of Kristine’s not only for her knowledge and experience, but the way she delivers and cares for her students. Her classes feel like a beautiful safe place to learn and grow.
— Katie Z, Australia (21 Weeks storytelling workshop)

FAQ

I already have a project, can I bring that?

Yes, absolutely. If you already have a project going we can use our time together to really focus the work. The mentoring will be tailored to best suit your needs and meet you where you are.

I can’t make the meetings every time, can I still do it?

Yes, absolutely. The group sessions are recorded, The Opening Line is self-paced and for our mentoring sessions we can find alternate times. I want you to start something and I want to help you get there. All group meetings will be recorded.

Do you have scholarship seats?

Every workshop I teach has space for people who can’t afford the tuition or need a bit of help. How many seats depends on how many seats are taken by paying students but I always make room for at least one. Write me about how the workshop could benefit you and why you need the extra help right now.

I already took The Opening Line, how is this useful for me?

First off, contact me for a discount code for the Project Unknown! This workshop will take all the things you learned in The Opening Line and put it into practice for long-term sustainability. Since you already know how to build the story in pictures you will be left with more time to explore your joy and vision. It is independent of The Opening Line, but having done that workshop you will have an easier time getting started, which is why I’m offering it as a bonus in this workshop. If you need a refresher, the Opening Line is already in the portal for you to poke around. Welcome!

My summer is really busy with family, can I fit this in?

Yes, you can. I purposefully build my workshops for people who run busy lives, because I think learning to communicate with pictures is important, so I want you to have this time for yourself to treat your creativity. I can be flexible with the 1-1 meetings should you need to do one a different day than on the schedule. All group meetings are recorded so you can watch them later, but I do recommend trying to fit them in as they are most beneficial live.

WHEN DO WE MEET?

We will meet on the weekends this summer. They are spaced out to give you time to do the work.. We start Saturday and Sunday July 9 and 1o with 1-1 and group meetings. We repeat this process on July 30 and 31, and August 13-14. I space it out like this to give you time to catch up and have space to think and do the work in between each meeting. On August 28 we will have our final presentations.

Oh, no, PRESENTATION?!?

Yes. I will ask you to present your work. It does not have to be completed, but I firmly believe in the importance of learning to present your work regardless. If you want to keep doing photography as communication you also need to learn how to communicate ABOUT your photography, so our last meeting will be a group presentation where we will all introduce the work we have done this summer! This will help set you up to find the words to present your work to others down the line. Throughout the course I will prod you to speak about your process and work so you can get used to it. I am mindful that people have different comfort levels about speaking publicly, so please don’t hesitate to let me know what you are comfortable with so we can find a way for you to express yourself that works for you.

What is the difference between the Self-Study and the Mentored WOrkshop?

I recognise that getting to meetings in the summer can be difficult for many people, and also the price point of a mentored workshop can be steep, so I’ve created a space for those who work well independently and are able to keep themselves motivated to stay the course. You will get to participate in the final presentation for community and feedback, and I will be available to you via email if you have any questions. If you have any questions about this option, please don’t hesitate to get in touch!
