Newsletter - Marie Sjøvold

Hello,

Every month I’ll spotlight a photographer you may not have heard of because, well, photographers do awesome stuff, work hard and sometimes they hit a note that is just awesome and needs to be shared. If it gets me inspired, maybe it'll get you inspired too!

Kind of like that song I just found here and am currently obsessing over.

Anyway. This week I want to start off with some poetic images from Norwegian photographer Marie Sjøvold. I’m Norwegian, so you will see a lot of Scandinavian and European photographers pop up in this spotlight, a lot of them women. And some of them are my friends, so full disclosure: I'm a bit biased about their work.

Marie was a photojournalist who turned her camera on her family and it morphed into some amazing work. First her grandparents and then herself and then her kids. Later she has also done a project on people sleeping, and she's published 5 books plus a collection. She's always got something going, and her work is always evolving.

My personal favourite project of hers is the one named Midnight Milk about entering into motherhood. I loved this project before I became a mother, and I love it even more now that I am one.

What I enjoy about her images is how beautiful they are while they still tell a hard story. A favourite image of hers is the self portrait with her toddler daughter touching her breast while she was pregnant with her son. It’s so raw and powerful while so soft and feminine.

If you haven’t seen the work of Marie Sjøvold, plesase go look!

Tell me some of your favourite photographers at the moment, I’d love to see who inspires you.

All for now,

Kristine
