Newsletter - The power of boredom
Hi,
Boredom. It gets such a bad rap, we fight it with everything we got, we always have. Once screens entered our pockets, well, boredom got cured. Somewhat anyway. We fill our time, all our time, with something. Scroll, scroll, scroll.
The only time we can't fill our time with screen time, unless you have a waterproof one, is in the shower.
How I love the shower. It's quiet, it's lonely and it's pleasantly boring. It is also where I get most of my ideas. Why? Because I'm bored. My brain gets time off to process whatever it has ticking in there.
I'm the first to say I'm dependent on my screen, because I am. My phone gives me my average screen time once a week, and it's not a good number. I do admit a lot of my business is run from my phone, but still. I used to zone out a lot, now I feel that maybe I don't anymore. Not enough anyway.
Let's visit science. Dr. Sandi Mann has been researching boredom, and this is what she has to say: "Boredom gets the creative juices flowing. And when we try to get rid of all our boredom, we're perhaps eliminating our creativity as well."
So if you're reading this on your phone, thanks! But put it down and go get bored. For 5 minutes. For ten minutes. Carve out some time for your brain to get a break to get creative.
Where do you get bored? Hit reply and tell me!
All for now,
Kristine
