Newsletter - How to find a long term project...

Hello,

How do I find my story or long term project?

We open newspapers and magazines and they are filled to the brim with interesting content. How did the photographers come up with that? How did they find this interesting piece of information and then get it published in this well known publication, all while getting paid for it?

While some photographers land interesting features thought up by big-name editors in Midtown Manhattan, most photographers generate their own content. It's just as much a part of the job as making photographs: finding a story, doing the research, selling it to an outlet, that is all part of photojournalism. The actual photography is just the tip of the iceberg.

So how do you find this interesting nugget so you can explore it more? There is no definite answer to how you go about finding your project. The most important thing to hone in on is allowing yourself to be curious. When you go about your life in the world, while reading news, having a random conversation with a stranger in the grocery store, or noticing something while passing by, chances are you will encounter something you find interesting. The key to a story lies in allowing yourself to be curious, ask more questions, follow up on it, do research, ask questions again, and if you have still not satisfied your curiosity at the end of all that, likely other people will find it interesting too. That's a good time to make a mind-map and find ways to actually go about photographing the story.

And repeat.

Are you working on a bigger project? I'd love to hear more about it!

All for now,

Kristine
