Newsletter - Photographs as poems...
Hello,
Photography can be very instant and strike you from the minute you see it because what you’re looking at is a frame so full of information you just can’t look away.
If you know the painter Hieronymus Bosch, it would be the photographic equivalent of “The Garden of Earthly Delight.”
Or maybe a “Where’s Waldo” book.
But some photographs are the opposite. Some photographers tell stories as if they were photographic poems, and what lies underneath is so complex and so striking that you feel you have to uncover more. They pose a question you need an answer to.
One project recently struck my attention: Andres Gonzalez’ work on the epidemic of mass shootings in American schools. The project could very well fall into the droves of stories on this topic, but Gonzalez has made his project into a respectful, quiet and thoughtful narration on one of the most gruesome acts of terror there is.
I really encourage you to take a look, loud can be spoken in a quiet way.
Do you have a favourite quiet photographer? I love learning new work, so hit reply and tell me.
All for now,
Kristine
