Newsletter - How does life live...
Hi friends,
I was browsing the internet, and someone shared this little gem from the NY Times Op Docs: How Does Life Live.
If you have kids this short little video is not an unfamiliar scene, it is quite moving and a good reminder of being present enough while they are little to catch those glimpses into how their brains are connecting the dots.
It wasn't just the movie that caught my attention, it was the filmmaker. When I enjoy something I try to learn more about the people behind the work, so I can make a mental note to watch for what comes next, and this woman had a story that resonated with me. Having children made her loose one job, but connected her with her creativity in a transformational way, which ultimately led to this and other films. Her story had similar aspects to my own, and that made me feel a part of hers.
I have found in motherhood a community of humans I didn't even know existed. You become a parent and all of a sudden you're given an all-access pass to other parents and their ups and downs. We share our experiences while laughing and shrugging, because what can you do when you are standing at the checkout with one toddler screaming on the floor and the other pulling out all the chocolates. When you make eye-contact with that one other parent in the store who gives you the nod and the crooked smile, you're reminded that life is ok, things are normal, you are ok, nothing new under the sun. That is magical. That is community, and it feels safe.
There was some magic in this Op Ed from March, 2017. Shared experiences with a filmmaker I'll likely never meet, but by her telling her story, her film, her kids' questions, I was reminded that tomorrow I'm going to really listen to mine. Maybe they will say something that makes me smile. They probably will.
I hope you had a great first week of 2020! Hit reply and say hello, I really love hearing from you.
All for now,
Kristine
